In carving a niche for itself, Nigerian hip hop has appropriated globalised elements from its American counterpart, while simultaneously accentuating elements of domestication. This has extended to Nigerian hip hop artists, who battle for supremacy and relevance on the airwaves. Lyrical ingenuity has been influential in the rise and global spread of hip hop.
The paper goes further to state that in the absence of the pidgin language, disseminating messages through songs will not get to the actual target. This paper, therefore, seeks to demonstrate that pidgin language plays a prevailing role than English Language in Nigeria these days. The pidgin language that has been frowned at decades ago is now a contemporary communicative instrument used by different people and for different purposes. New lexical items are brought into the province of the language daily especially by Nigerian musicians from the Niger-Delta and Lagos areas. It is a fast-growing language in Nigeria. The way it is used in Nigeria and elsewhere does not require one going to school to study it before one can actually speak it. The pidgin language is for everybody: the educated, uneducated, rich, poor, etc. This is because of the enormous population of illiterates in Nigeria. The pidgin language is mostly employed to solve the issues of language difficulties in terms of usage. Pidgin language (PL) is cardinal o many Nigerians especially in the South-South region, where the language is mostly used. This paper examines the role and impact of Yabis music on both the contemporary Nigerian music and political scenes. Thus the stage was set for a new phenomenon among the Nigerian popular music known as the Yabis music, through which those who governed through coercion were ridiculed and their bad policies subjected to derision in several lyrics of many Nigerian popular music who later joined Fela in the 1980's and after. However, the protracted military rule in Nigeria coupled with the large scale embezzlement and looting of the nation's treasury, undermining democratic processes as well as the promotion of large scale violence among other things, by the nation's military junta provided a new theme for Fela's vocal music from the mid 1970's. Secondly, the content of his vocal music changed tremendously from abstract themes to day-to-day happenings among the common people (the masses) in Nigerian populace.
First, he discarded with his erstwhile jazz-highlife style and came up with a new style he christened "Afro-beat", a mixture of American jazz and Yoruba folk music. Since the early 1970's when the late Nigerian Afro-beat proponent, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti (formerly known as Fela Ransome-Kuti) returned from a tour of the United States of America, his music had witnessed a lot of transformation.
